Games Where Kids Have To Clean Horse Poop

So I am here loading data… My 8 year old wants me to watch her play the wii.  Sure.  I am not really watching, I am sitting in the same room working on my laptop.  Every now and then I’ll glance over and be a good dad.

This gives you an idea of what she wants me to watch her play.  Yeah I am an awesome dad :) But… I noticed something…

Yeah, that is right.  She is cleaning Horse poop in the stables as part of the game.  Seriously.. WTF?  What kind of game makes you clean Horse crap.  (Let alone any type of fecal matter)  I was busting out laughing and I still don’t think she gets why it is funny (to me).

So kids.  If you are really good, maybe one day your mom or dad will buy you a video game where you too can clean horse crap.

Copying PPC Ads?

Ok, I have a question for you all. I have had products I have created in the past cracked and stolen via piracy (Encrypted Messenger) which is one of the biggest reasons I stopped updating the software and just gave it away for free.  Since I moved into affiliate marketing I have had entire websites copied and ripped off.  I figured that was just the way it went.  Am I wrong?

So I did some digging and research and found keywordspy and spyfu and even shoemoney tools as well as some clickbank products and others which all copy keywords and ads more or less.  Some people use this information for inspiration, some just copy the ads directly and test which ads work.  I have done both.

I got an email from a super affiliate (who apparently makes a ton more money than I do) getting mad at me for copying one of his ads. Is he right? Did I copy him? Not him personally.. no.  I really don’t know who he is. I would guess his ad came from one of those places I linked to above.

Is it bad/evil to use the tools above to test different existing ads out there? Feel free to comment, I am really curious what people think about this one.

Email Answers: Does The “Rule of 30″ apply to impressions?

Cache (yeah that is his real name.. I think ;) ) wrote me an email:

Hey John – we are doing some ads and testing things. You seem to be a guru in this area, I wondered if you had an idea on this question.

I read a good article that stated statistically speaking 30 responses under the exact same conditions is accurate + or – 5%. This helps a lot to know statistically if we had the same keyword same add 30 people came to the landing page none converted then we try something else. I have another question and wasn’t sure if you knew the answer. I would like to know statistically how many impressions on a specific keyword/ad copy combo before it is unlikely to change. So if we don’t get 30 clicks how long do we wait before we change. I would think there is a similar statistic saying so many impressions under the same criteria means you will continue to get the same response. If we could know that then we know when to change things up so we aren’t moving to quick or too late. I am searching for an answer to this question if you can help that would be great.

To summarize:
If your landing page gets 30+ hits and no conversions you really need to change something (usually the landing page). I’d say that is fair.
As far as impressions go…. What I like to do is take my ads and keywords and split them apart in high CTR campaigns and low CTR campaigns. When I first start a campaign I just don’t know yet, but over time I get a good idea of CTR and move the higher CTR adgroups together in their own campaign.

If you are getting zero impressions but a high position then the keyword you have just doesn’t have much traffic. Leave it alone for a while.
If you are getting lots of impressions but a low ranking (say 10 or so) then you have a keyword that will work, but you really should fix your adcopy and/or raise your bids. Back to the original question….

So if we don’t get 30 clicks [on an ad] how long do we wait before we change.

My answer: You should be split testing with multiple ads (usually two). Then you use the “rule of 30″ for picking which ad you should replace with a new ad, then you wait for 30 more clicks on the ad and replace the ad with the lowest profit margin. Using this tactic over time will always yield good results over the long term.

PS: You should also be split testing your landing pages.

Update From My Comment:
“…if you are really looking for a target number. Try it this way.

1) What is your target CTR? Lets go with 1% (I see everything from .00% to 60+% CTR on ads). I would say take the average CTR across your similar ads/keywords as a baseline.
2) At a 1% CTR you would need 3000 impressions to get 30 clicks. Using the 33% rule take 1/3 of that and you get your answer. 1000 impressions and you know you probably have a dud.
3) A little Algebra and we have a formula for you.
Target impressions before it is likely a dud = Target CTR% / 10

Example 1:
Your CTR rate should be 1% so you if you get over 1000 impressions then you will never meet 1% CTR., Change something.

Example 2:
Your CTR rate should be 3% so you if you get over 333 impressions then you will never meet 3% CTR., Change something.

Example 3:
Your CTR rate should be .02% so you if you get over 50,000 impressions then you will never meet .02% CTR., Change something.”

iPhone 3G, no line wait easy as pie

I had breakfast at IHOP with my daughter.  Afterwards we stopped by the ATT store to see how bad it was.  The place was busy but there was no line.  I wasn’t really planning on buying an iPhone 3g and we went to play with the iPhone 3g display models.  It does feel amazing good in your hands.  (I have had several Windows Mobile cellphones, and while they could do cool things they never, ever felt good in your hands).  While we were playing with the phones one of the managers asked me if I needed anything, nah.. we are just looking, but I did ask if they actually had any iPhones in stock since the place seemed a little slow.  He said they have just barely gotten some in a few minutes ago.  I turned around and someone must have told because the store was suddenly packed with about 40-50 people behind me.  Here I am just playing with the phone with zero plans to buy one and 50 people behind me chompin’ at the bit for a chance to be near the thing…  I figured.  Sure I’ll buy the white 16g one.  If I don’t like it, I can take it back in a few days and only have to pay 10% restocking.  I’ll pay $30ish to try it for a week or so.

I kept my current phone since it does video and WAY better GPS and has lots more Bluetooth features enabled and live TV and so on…  All pics were taken with my Sanyo M1  (videos too)

This is Dave checking me out.  (Or processing my purchase– however you want to say it)

And this video contains me on a VERY BAD HAIR DAY telling you how to get an iPhone 3g with no wait in line.

It should be noted that as I was shooting these videos with my other Cell Phone, Dave stopped trying to tell me that the iPhone was better then air :)   Ok ok.. he never really said that, but like I said.. the iPhone is really close, but not quite there yet…

I am off to develop a few apps for it and see how that goes.

A solution to Macbook Pro’s crapping out on standby/suspend

Looks like I have finally found a solution to my Macbook Pro always crashing on suspend/standby.  Before my solution was to have it auto hibernate via setting permanent hibernate via the console.  That solution stopped working a few days ago.  (Probably some new patch from Apple that screwed it up — Note: I almost typed Microsoft…)  So I did some research.  Turns out that if you unplug the Macbook from power and *any* perhipherals (usb, firewire, anything) first (and you get rid of the hibernat settings you had) then it goes into standby very happily and wakes up in about a sec when you open the lid.  Looks like I won’t be permabooting in XP on this puppy for now.

Summary: Unplug EVERYTHING, including power from the laptop before you close the lid and you should be fine.

Finally.. a “hack” Better then the iphone 3G

I have been using Sprint EVDO for almost a year now and I am very, very happy with the speed and coverage.  I would love an iPhone.  Infact I waited for the iPhone 3G to come out.  Sadly it *still* does not do as much as my Sanyo M1 does.  (but it is close)…  then I read about battery life and other issues.. blah blah.. more or less the consensus is that the iPhone 3G is close but not there yet.

My solution?  Get an iPod Touch and a battery powered personal evdo hotspot. Yep.  If things go right I’ll be walking around with a nearly permanent hotspot in my pocket.  I wonder if they have an affiliate program.  If so I need to change my link :) .

So.. iPod Touch for $400 ish + $180ish for the evdo hotspot device.  $500-$600 range.  The biggest win is that I DONT HAVE TO SWITCH TO AT&T.  I will have faster internet speeds then any 3G iPhone and it may save on battery life.  (Not sure about that yet… off to do some research…)  Turns out the router lasts about 2 hours but there are tricks (not very sophisticated) to extend it.  The iPod Touch’s wifi usage battery life is only 3 hours anyways.  So… hmmm… $550ish for a good 2 hours a day of highspeed on an iPod touch.  The claim for the iphone 3g is 6 hours on wifi.  I am not sure I believe that.  Looks like I am still in a holding pattern on the whole iphone/internet tablet thing…. More to come I am sure.

Am I Hiring?

This will be kinda introspective (had to look that up to make sure I was using it right).  Ok, so I have a bunch of internet projects.  Some are successful and some are major flops.  But I have a pretty decent system for going from idea to implementation to profit (or loss).  At this point it is really just a matter of copying it over and over to scale things.  [and no it isn't a huge secret. pick a niche, research, build, test, repeat until you have success (or fail) and move onto the next one].

This puts me in the spot of looking to hire.  I have been watching and learning from others who outsource outside the US.  There are horror stories and success stories.  If I hire outside the US, I don’t have to worry about office space, extra taxes, employee benefits, extra taxes (did I say that one already? :) ).  But it also means that I will have a significant amount of turnover (not too bad if I have everything documented rather well) but still something to deal with.  As far as hiring in the US, I’ve thought of taking someone who is honest, smart and hardworking and just training them in the skills they will need.  Trust and smartness are way more important then skills (you can learn what you need in this business).

Thats where I am at.  Hire someone?  Keep writing computer programs to do things for me?  Hire someone to write my programs to do things for me (plus all the other cool stuff I do)?  (Some things can’t be done automatically — but lots of repetitive things can)  If I do hire someone, do I hire local, mid west us or foreign?  Hire someone local who I can trust and teach them what they need to know (or pay for their training)?  I don’t expect to have an answer right away, I am still mulling things over.  Feel free to offer advice.

PS.  I haven’t forgotten about that free PPC app.  I work on it while I am flying in a plane (which only happens twice a week).

Noob? Want To Get A Headstart… for Free?

I finally took a look at Jeremy’s black ink project.  There is some really good info in there.  In fact there are things in Black Ink Project that I was hoping to learn at elite retreat that I didn’t.  The short of it.  Sign up.  It is totally free (but you should participate and share).  Hurry before Jeremy changes his mind.

TRACK YOUR ADS!!!11!!

Somehow my wife talked me into going with her and my 3 daughters to the mall for clothing shopping. *hint* If your wife suggests you go to the mall with her and the girls for some shopping… so NO. (but do it nicely).

Needless to say I was bored out of my mind. Malls these days don’t have much appeal for me. At all.

But.. I did see something interesting. There was a person at one of those kiosk booths in the center of the mall using facebook. I was shocked to meet an actual facebook user. (Someone who really is into it.. not someone who just uses for ads and a little bit of networking). So I asked him a few questions about how he used it and what he thought of the ads on the left hand side. Turns out he clicks on the ads from time to time but hasn’t ever bought anything off them. This led to him telling me that he actually has been working on making facebook ads for their product. He was limiting it to just two state (Utah and Idaho). I told him that since the product was geared more towards religious people to not limit it just to those two states, but use religions as targets (Mormon, LDS, Christian, Protestant, Catholic, etc..) and leave it for worldwide or national. Then I asked him if he was able to track a sale from an ad. I wasn’t sure if he got what I meant at first so I explained about creating a bunch of different ads on facebook and tracking each one to know if it resulted in a sale…

If you are not able to track a click on an ad to a sale (or action/goal) then you are really just throwing your money away. Sure at first you need to throw a bunch of different ads and keyword /landing page /domain combinations. But after you have some data and conversions you need to revisit the campaign and optimize it. You can NOT do this without some sort of tracking. (And yeah I know google, yahoo and MSN all have tracking features.. but for some reason they never seem to catch 100% of the conversions. It is kinda annoying which is why I have a supplemental tracking system)

Send each keyword to a landing page with a separate tag. mypage?k=1000 or mypage?k=keyword (I recommend against using the keyword instead of a number in your tracking) and then carry that identifier out to the conversion. This way you know which ad/keyword combination resulted in a sale without relying just on your PPC provider to have accurate tracking (they are really good, but not 100%). Plus with this method you can track for PPC providers that don’t even have tracking (facebook and others).

Blindly Adding Keywords

I saw a crazy ad on gmail today. I was viewing emails from someone in utah.  (Plus I live in utah).  This ad was so untargeted it registered on my WTF meter.  Here is what they did…

Their primary keyword is jazz obviously.  However… putting jazz in any keyword suggestion box will also return utah or utah jazz (the NBA team).  Instead of reviewing the automated suggested keywords, they just dumped them all into their PPC campaign… bad idea on Adwords.  This will result in a lower CTR and wasted clicks.  (Don’t worry I didn’t click it)

So… look before you blindly add keywords.  (Or have some sort of algorithm check for you)
